how to get a perfect sunless tanIt’s spring break season and with it comes skirts and shorts weather. However after a long wet winter I for one am a healthy shade of fish belly white and in no state to slip into a sun dress. Since sun is scarce in Seattle and tanning beds are a no-go, I’ve whole heartedly embraced sunless tanning. After ten odd years of using tans from a bottle, I’ve figured out how to have the perfect bronzed glow all year long.

The perfect sunless tan started in the shower where you should start by using your favorite exfoliating scrub. A scrub helps remove any rough patches where skin may be dry and flaking plus is also removes any lingering tanner from previous applications. I recommend the JERGENS® Natural Glow® Color Primer In-Shower Scrub for ultra smooth skin. This is also where you should shave for the smoothest possible application.

Getting on to the actual sunless tan part, I start by applying a small amount of regular lotion on my hands, feet, knees, and elbows. This helps control any possible patchiness on these areas that are the most susceptible. Then using a tanning mitt, apply a pump of JERGENS® Natural Glow® Instant Sun® Sunless Tanning Mousse to the mitt and begin applying your sunless tanner in long ovular strokes. Start in the middle of a body part then work outwards. For example, start at the middle of your shin and then work outwards to your knees and ankles. Continue body part by body part (lower leg, upper leg, belly, chest, etc) until you’ve covered every nook and cranny.
Extra Tip: use the remaining self tanning mouse from your mitt to apply product to your feet and the tops of your hands. This way you won’t have excess product on those tricky areas.

Now it’s the waiting game. Allow your tan to set from upwards of 8 hours then rinse it off, revealing your natural summer glow fresh from the bottle! This tan should last you between 7-10 days on its own however I like to maintain my tan by using JERGENS® Natural Glow® Daily Moisturizer every few days for an added boost to my tan. With the use of the gradual glow moisturizer, I’ve been able to keep a single sunless tan upwards to two weeks!

I’ve never used these products and I always wondered how they worked. I’m not sure I’ll ever try it. Theres a part of me that thinks anything that you put on your body that changes the skin color can’t be good for year, and years from now they might discover some adverse effects from them. So for now, I’ll just stay white. TFS!

Thanks for reading and commenting Amy! That is definitely a factor to consider. I’ve been using these Jergens products for 10+ years now and haven’t seen any adverse affects but maybe 50+ years of use will be a different story. Who knows. I love being tan and since skin cancer runs in my family, I’d rather use a lotion than bake my skin in the sun.

With the lotion, I just apply using my hands but for the Instant Sun mousse, I like using a mitt so I don’t get stained hands. Thanks for reading Rania!

You are really good in it, Ana! I tried self tanners so many times and it never come out good – no matter how well I exfoliated my skin before. So I just got used to the fact that I am a SnowWhite :)) That tan looks so pretty on you! I wish I could rock a sun kissed skin too!
