Guide to Fall Fashion Trends

Fall Fashion Trends - Northwest Blonde - style guideHappy first day of fall! Whether you like it or not, fall is here and it’s time to change out some of out fashion and style choices. I’ll admit that sometimes it’s hard to stay up to date with the latest trends. We all have busy lives but that is what I’m here for! I present my Guide to Fall Fashion Trends (for a Fashionista) with everything you need to know about rocking the latest trends for this fall.

1. Plaid – Fall and plaid, especially if it’s flannel, are a couple that no one has to question. Try a plaid flannel button up with blue jeans for a basic fall look or, for the more adventurous, test out a plaid shirtdress. If you aren’t sure how you feel about the popular fall trend, test it out with a simple tartan scarf or other accessory.

2. Oversized Scarves – A couple of years ago the internet went crazy over a Zara blanket scarf and the excitement is around to stay. Except this time around blanket scarves are easy to come by as nearly every major retailer carries the style. And any age can easily wear this style of scarf. Freezing during your kids soccer game? Wrap it around yourself as a blanket! Sleepy during your 8am class? Bundle it up like a pillow! See tons of uses

3. Boots and Booties – With cooler temperatures comes the need to put away sandals and start wearing closed toed shoes. Sad, yes, but there are various upsides: no need to worry about making your weekly pedicure appointment and you get to wear boots! They make a great statement with any outfit and can make you feel dressed up even on the coldest and wettest days. For more on boots for fall, see my Ultimate Guide to Fall Boots (For a Fashionista)

4. Flare Jeans – The 70’s are back and with them come flare jeans. This is wonderful news as every single body type can rock this trend and have it flatter their shape. If you have grown attached to your skinnies over the past couple years and aren’t ready to go all out That 70’s Show, try out a basic boot cut style first. There is still a flared opening but it’s nothing crazy. Pair with just about any top and shoes and you have an on trend look.

5. Hats – One of the greatest trends of the season is hats. They conceal the worst of hair days or if your dry shampoo isn’t on it’s A-game. Felt or wool are materials to look for in your fall fashion hat. Also don’t go for anything with too floppy a brim as that may become too summery of a look. As for color, grey, black, and camel are your standards but for the more daring look for jewel tones like plum and oxblood.

6. Faux Suede – Along with everything else 70’s suede is also back for fall. This time it is being done a little differently as we are seeing suede paired with short hemlines and plenty of buttons. Try a faux suede mini skirt or dress. Pair suede with other fabrics like denim for the perfect mix of textures.

7. Fringe – This trend can be hard for some to wear and downright scary for others but the fall trend of fringe can be done right. For those looking to dip a toe into fringe, try adding a bag with fringe detail to your wardrobe. For others wanting to dive into this particular trend try adding a fringe top or shoes. Looking to keep things office appropriate? Try a pencil skirt with fringe detail along the hem line. You can read more about embracing fringe here.

8. Sweaters – While we all know to wear sweaters in the fall and winter, this season sweater weather now translates into sleeveless weather. Yep, don your favorite turtlenecks or cowls earlier this year because sleeveless sweaters are now in vogue. These tops are extremely versatile and can be paired with nearly anything from jeans to slacks to skirts. If you hesitate to show your arms, I recommend trying this style with the addition of a third piece like a blazer to cover up but without the bulk or a traditional sweater.

What are your favorite fall fashion trends? Also let me know if you like the format of these style guides and if there are any topics you think I should cover
