Be Your Own Monster + GIVEAWAY

Goodwill-Be-Your-Own-Monster-Halloween-costume-SeattleIt’s officially October so you know what that means. Halloween is upon us! I had the pleasure of attending an event this week hosted by Goodwill, all about how to make creative costumes. Stylist Darcy Camden and makeup artist Tiffany Lowry pulled pieces from a Seattle Goodwill the morning of the event and the finished products were REALLY impressive. They created five original costumes from scratch that anyone can recreate with a trip to your local Goodwill. Here are some tips from Darcy and Tiffany:

-Go in with an idea but don’t be opposed to inspiration. Sometimes an item will catch your eye that will lead you down a different path than you expected when you walked in the door.

-Use the costume section, just don’t stick to it. There is no need to  buy a pre assembled sexy nurse costume when you can flex your creativity muscles and incorporate other pieces from the store along with pieces from the costume section.

-Get creative with clothes. Pants don’t have to just be pants! If the material speaks to you, think about different ways to use it. For example, Darcy used a pair of stretch pants to create a turban headpiece.

-Don’t just stick to clothes. Darcy used a couple different household items to accessorize and create finishing touches to different costumes.

-Wig it. Wearing a wig signals that you are indeed wearing a costume. Even if your hair is already in line with your themed costume, adding a wig gives you more freedom to experiment with styles.

-Recycle old costumes. Last minute party to attend and no costume? Zombify what you wore last year! Adding some fake scar tattoos and white face paint will have you ready in a jiffy.
