April Showers

how to still dress up on rainy daysThe saying goes “April showers bring May flowers.” Well in Seattle it should be March showers bring April flowers! We are in the heart of spring here in the Pacific Northwest which means blooming flowers everywhere, warmer temperatures, and the occasional rain shower. For a city known for its rainfall, I’ll let you in on the most well kept local secret: it actually doesn’t rain a lot especially in the spring.

While it may not rain a lot, it may rain often. This means light scattered showers for 10 minutes then an hour of grey skies or even sun. This sort of bipolar weather requires a special type of outfit including both sunglasses, an umbrella, and a weather proof coat.

I love a trench coat for these unpredictable weather days. Whether you’re being rained on or not, they are a chic and classic wardrobe piece for every woman no matter her age. (Find other wardrobe essentials here) There are some things to think about when picking out the perfect trench, mainly length and color.

For length, consider the hem lines you normally wear. Ideally you’ll have a little flash of skirt showing beneath your coat but of course this varies person to person and season to season. For the winter months a longer hem is better to keep out the cold and wet, while a shorter coat is better for spring and fall.
Color also varies depending on your personal style preference. Trench coats range in a variety of colors from near white to black. I prefer the classic beige color
