Visiting the Amazon Spheres

Happy Friday friends! I hope you had a good week.

This week seems to be about all things resolutions and today is no different really. I have five major goals for the year (my 5 for 20) and one was to have more intentional family time. Because both Andrew and I have time-consuming hobbies, our weekends tend to book up really quickly. Right now I think we have something every single weekend until mid-March. So finding time to be together as a family generally means hanging out at home between Teddy’s bath and bedtime.

Well for this year, Andrew and I both wanted to make sure that we are carving out time to be a family and prioritizing being a three, so we committed to one family date a month. Time for us to be together and do some sort of activity as a family that isn’t just hanging around at home in the living room.

So last weekend, we started our Saturday with a family adventure down to the Amazon campus to visit “The Spheres”

The Spheres are part of the Amazon campus in downtown Seattle that are three giant connected glass domes that house four floors of tropical rainforest plants. Aka it’s a really gigantic greenhouse. Each floor represents and houses plants from cloud forests from different parts of the world along with a General Porpoise cafe on the second floor.

Since the Spheres are actually private Amazon property, you can’t go in unless you have an escort who works at Amazon. However, they open it up to the public for free two Saturdays a month BUT you need to have a reservation ahead of time. Andrew has been itching to go in and see the Spheres so he set up a time for us.

If you are in Seattle, either visiting or live in the general area, I’d highly recommend making the effort to go see inside. It’s really cool. Not just the plants but the entire building is interesting to experience from the inside. There are docents stationed in different areas who can tell you about the different flora on the various floors. One lady we chatted with knew a bunch about carnivorous plants (they feed them a liquid diet of enriched fertilizer) as well as some of the history of orchids. The fourth floor is where you want to go to see the most carnivorous plants btw 😉

Plus, since it’s a greenhouse the atmosphere was balmy and warm even during the first week of January. They have different tables, chairs, and work stations set up all around for people to sit and work. There is ever a spot at the very top of the dome where lawn chairs are laid out so employees and visitors can enjoy some of the greenhouse effects and see the sky at the same time – a true luxury in a grey and rainy city like Seattle.

Like I mentioned above, if you get peckish during your visit, there is a General Porpoise on the second floor. There’s also a restaurant that you can access from 6th Ave called Willmott’s Ghost that serves lunch.

If you are interested in visiting the Spheres, the rest of January is booked out but February still has plenty of spots available. Click here to go to their booking calendar to see which Saturdays are open to the public.

MY OUTFIT: Abercrombie Skinny Jeans (the best $40 jeans ever! I’m wearing size 27 short for ankle-length jeans no hemming required) // J.Crew Stripe shirt (it’s one of my most worn tops. I’m wearing a medium for a looser fit) // Stuart Weitzman Lowland Boots (I love these boots but they are a serious splurge. If you’re looking for something similar, these Blondo boots give you a similar look for a fraction of the price but are also waterproof. I have them and love them too. They are currently 50% off!) // London Fog trench coat (this is a trench coat ideal for cooler weather since it has a quilted liner for added warmth. I’m wearing a size small. Read my in-depth review here) // J.Crew Sweater Blazer (one part, cardigan, one part blazer, 100% awesome. I love these sweater blazers and have them in several colors. Read my whole review here)

TEDDY’S OUTFIT: Cat & Jack Sweatshirt (a family friend personalized this for him for Christmas. I love it so much I have him wear it anytime it’s clean) // Carter’s “Jeans” // Addidas Stan Smith Sneakers // ErgoBaby Carrier (We go this used from a kids consignment store. It’s fine and gets the job done but now that he’s older and more active, I wish I had spent a little more and got the Ergo OMI360 that allows them to face forwards)
