Tips for Finding the Perfect Winter Coat

how to find the best winter coat for youWith the temperatures dropping into single digits this weekend, I was reminded once again about the value of a good winter coat. A really great coat often ends up being an investment so there are a couple things to consider before taking the plunge.

Fabric – Depending on where you live, you’ll want to consider several different fabrics. Down (or puffer) coats are great for keeping you warm on the coldest days. Wool has a great weight and is perfect for a classic timeless look. Faux fur is more modern and makes a serious statement.

Silhouette – Belted, wrapped, cape, or A-line, there are many shapes and lengths of coat to consider. For this it’s good to consider the rest of your wardrobe. Picking a shape and length that flatters the rest of your wardrobe will ensure you get the most wear out of your coat. For a professional shape, maybe try belted (it’s very Olivia Pope). For a feminine shape, think about a cape or A-line.

Fit – You should be able to freely move your arms without problems. However sometimes we purchase coats without thinking about the reality of winter. Consider bringing a sweater or any extra layers with you while shopping. Testing out the coat with additional layers will give you the true winter experience and ensure a perfect fit.

Color – While you can find any color under the sun, again look to your wardrobe for answers. Find a color that matches the rest of your wardrobe. Neutrals are (almost) always the answer because you will never go wrong with either black or camel.

Love the tips your mentioned! I typically go for a belted coat because it’s always far more flattering for my figure! I also love sticking with black and grey coats–you can never go wrong with neutrals!

I always tend to have to order a good winter coat online. Where I live in Texas we don’t really have extreme winters so they only sell lighter jackets or blends. They don’t last long and don’t hold up to New York, which is where we travel to. I finally ended up ordered a down jacket on Amazon during their black Friday deals.

Down is totally the way to go with extreme cold weather. I have family in TX so I totally understand the lack of cold weather clothing there. Thanks for sharing Mayra!

My last coat was from Gap and I had had it since high school. It was very classic. Camel wool with a bright pink silk lining… it was so old though, so this year I finally updated!
Banana Republic, navy blue wool with toggles. Still so classic and perfect for the short lived season here in the South. Love the ideas you gave here for thinking this decision through. Coats can last for YEARS (as exemplified by me haha) but serve a very important function that deserve some serious thought!

Exactly! I’m sure that Gap coat served you well for years! I love that you went with navy rather than black for your update! Thanks for sharing your story with me Joy!

I do love the camel as it is truly a classic. yes the importance of winter is crucial especially in Canada. Yesterday we got 51 cm of snow! That’s nearly a meter long! Crazy…on Saturday it was -45 degress celsius. Insane!

Thanks crazy! I couldn’t survive with that kind of cold. A good coat (plus layers and layers I’m guessing) are doubly important
