One Summer Trend I Just Can’t Get Behind

why I don't wear maxi dresses - who what wear target skirt - summer trends I don't like

I have a feeling that this is going to be a bit of an unpopular opinion but I just can’t get behind maxi dresses. I know, I know! It’s a summer staple. They are easy and breezy but I just can’t quite get behind this style. And trust me, I’ve tried!

I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that I don’t like about maxi dresses in summer. Maybe it’s that they are generally beachy and you just can’t quite look as put together as I normally like. Maybe it’s that most styles I’ve seen are either loud prints or just flat black. Or maybe it’s just that I’m 5’5” and feel a need to wear heels when I have a long hemline.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t just out-and-out hate maxi dresses. I like them just fine in the fall and winter. I wear them quite regularly (see here, here, here, and here). I wear both maxi dresses and skirts with boots, leather jackets, and layers! So many layers. And don’t worry, I see the irony of the fact that this style is the most popular (and generally made for) the summer months but I just don’t like it.

From now I’ll just skip the maxi dresses in the summer from here on out and stick with them in the colder months.

Do you like wearing maxi dresses? What is it about maxi dresses in summer that I’m missing? Let me know in the comments.

Read my other “unpopular opinion” post here. If you’re a fan of athleisure, I have some bad news for you…

Until next time,

I didn’t even know you could wear maxi dresses in the winter. I wouldn’t even consider it. You must live in a warmer climate than me because it would be a disaster to wear a maxi dress in snow and slush here in Wisconsin. But I totally get not getting behind maxi dresses. It took me awhile to catch on to them myself. I found what works for me is to have sheer ones at the leg…so you can still see my legs through the fabric. Or a hi-low hem or slits too works. But yes, summer only…especially in Wisconsin. Now I’ll have to see how you wore maxi dresses in winter, cause I can’t even imagine it. I love your outfit. That skirt is so pretty!

  2. I really want to get into maxi dresses next year, as I have seen some ladies wear them so well through the summer. I got so distracted by all the jumpsuits this year, but I’m a fan. Your skirt and blouse, however, are gorgeous! xx

So I just got my first maxi dress. it’s striped and I do love it. It’s the only one I actually think is easy to style and doesn’t hang on me and make me feel like I’m wearing a mumu.

I wear maxi dresses in the summer but sort of agree that they are pretty beachy! I usually only wear them on vacation!
