Cozy Warm Fall Layers

It’s that time of year when I’m all about layering up. Layering up against the cold, the wind, and the rain. Luckily wearing more layers doesn’t always have to mean looking like the Michelin Man anymore.

There was a time when staying warm meant thermal base layer, shirt, sweater, coat, and fleece leggings, jeans, wool socks, and boots. But I’ve since moved away from the East Coast and the subsequent Nor’Easters I’d slog my way through on foot. Ahh the glamour of city living.

I’m kidding mostly but I’ve learned to dress smarter for the average chilly fall and winter day. While I love a chunky knit to keep me warm, I try to pair a heavy layer with a more sleek one. That was around the same time that I learned about tissue turtlenecks, which if you’ve been around this part of the internet for a while, you’ll know I’m a super fan. A turtleneck made of skimming tee shirt material made for layering. I’m on board!

Basically pair one of these babies underneath any sweater and you’ve got yourself a fantastic way to stay warm without too many extra layers this season. Tissue turtleneck under a button-up? I’ve done it. Tissue turtleneck under a turtleneck sweater. A little meta but I’m not above it. However, today’s outfit is my favorite way to pair up layers to be warm while still remaining comfortable. Tissue turtleneck paired with a roomy and oversized sweater is a match made in cozy fall heaven. I highly recommend that you try it out. It’s allowed me to be coat free on these last days of fall before real winter weather starts to set in.

J.Crew Tissue Turtleneck

This is hands-down the best layering piece for the fall and winter. It runs TTS but is meant to be fitted so you can size up if you want it to feel a little looser. It comes in so many different colors and patterns as well. I have it in stripe, both black and white and white and black. They are also available at J.Crew Factory. Seriously grab a couple of these the next time they are on sale because you’ll want to rotate through them as the weather gets colder. I almost always start my layered looks with this tissue turtleneck. Not only does it help keep me warm but it also mitigates the itchiness of other layers and sweaters that I may be wearing. (I have another in-depth review here)

J.Crew Mock-neck Cableknit Sweater

Thankfully this isn’t an itchy sweater at all but it just looks great layered. This sweater would be a great staple to get you through the winter months but it would also just generally serve you well because what’s more classic winter style than a cable knit sweater. Since it’s an alpaca blend, it’s pretty warm. With just these two layers I’ve been able to go out on chilly days without needing a coat.

It fits a little boxy and oversized so I’d recommend sizing down if you want a more fitted look. I’m wearing a size small and it’s still quite roomy on me as you can see. This sweater is available in pink, olive, cream, burgundy, and grey but sizes are going fast. I’d love to also get it in the pink color but I have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to my sweater collection…

Abercrombie High-rise Skinny Jeans

These are easily my new go-to jeans. They are high-rise, super stretchy jeans that come in eight washes, three inseams, and only cost me $45. They hold my new mom belly in without feeling constricting and they don’t stretch out either, which amazes me since I have a complete range of motion in them. I opted for the shorter inseam, which gives me the perfect ankle length jeans without any cuffing, hemming, or rolling involved.

If you haven’t looked at Abercrombie & Fitch recently, go give it another chance. You may be pleasantly surprised, like I was, that it’s not the A&F circa 2002 anymore. (I have an in-depth review of these jeans here as well)
