Who else feels like quarantining has really paired down everything in life. I only wear a handful of clothes because I don’t go out anymore. I rarely do my hair or makeup for the same reason. I only see the same five people. Everything has been whittled down to its bare bones but not all of it has been bad.

I finally got my hair done last week after 11 months and it really got me thinking about my current beauty routine. I shared a couple of weeks ago that my hair, while long and needing a trim, was in the best condition it’s ever been in mainly because I don’t mess with it anymore. No more blowouts, no more hot tools, and guess what? It’s healthier than ever. Even my hair stylist commented on how it was looking really healthy, strong, and full.

Well, it’s not just my hair. My skin has been looking better than at any time in my life that I can remember. No weird breakouts even during that time of the month. The color is evening out and my old acne scars are finally healing.

The reason it’s finally doing so well? Same as my hair, I have finally left it alone for four months. It’s amazing how your hair and skin can flourish so much when you just leave them alone.

Every beauty routine that I had going into quarantine was already a 5-minute “mommy” version. Now that I’m home 24/7, all my routines have been paired down even further. Everything is bare-bones at this point and it looks like it’s working.

Skincare is almost nonexistent for me anymore. Goodbye, facewash! These days I just use some warm water and a baby washcloth. Then it’s moisturizer and SPF. Occasionally I’ll remember to use a vitamin C serum and my resurfacing peel. But honestly, it’s just warm water and lotions.

Makeup these days is just SPF and mascara. I mean why wear foundation when you’re just going to wear a mask on top, right?

No one is more surprised than me! I spent years struggling with cystic acne, redness, oily skin, you name it. I tried all the remedies from DIY face masks to prescription antibiotics. All it took was letting it be.

I’m leaving quarantine loving my bare face a lot more than when I started. If only I could go back and tell 22 year old me that layering on the foundation was not the solution. Use fewer products, be consistent with the ones you do use, drink enough water, and eat lots of veggies. Your skin will thank you.
